Pure and Simple

First 8c at La Pedriza, Madrid. from Talo Martin on Vimeo.

Typically, videos about pro climbers slapping their way up climbs that I’ll never be strong enough to even consider doesn’t inspire me. But this video is different. There’s just…..there’s nothing to it. It’s so simple. It’s so beautiful. This is the poetry of our bodies in motion. This is the poetry of climbing. This is the most sublime moment. {inspiration}

The Philosopher’s Stone

Rarely are climbing films this personal, insightful, or philosophic. I feel like this respresents me as a climber and the community that I know and love. This video doesnt seem to be about a professional at all, just a passionate individual trying to express his love for a thing. {Inspiration}

My Heart

One of the best documentary climbing films to date. This story about Lynn Hill, the first person to free climb The Nose on El Capitan in 1993, is told in a style that has been almost entirely lost in climbing films today.

Lynn Hill is undoubtedly by favorite climber. Not neccassarily because of her achievements on the wall, but because of her ability to articulate some of the intangible aspects of climbing. { Lynn Hill Patience }

The Birth of My Future

Time spent in the repetitive monotony of a travel lull is that of planning, research, and the cultivation of imagination.While it’s certain that I’m not doing “nothing.” It’s become clear that I am no longer traveling. Work. Rest. Work. Rest. Gym. Rest. Work. Rest. Drums the routine. A necessary evil in the “Cashing Up!,” phase of any great independent adventure.

Indonesia is on the horizon. Four and a half months away with the promise of unclimbed peaks and hair-raising experiences that border on the indescribable. But I’m not counting the days…..I’m counting the minutes…..

Downtime in Australian winter for me, means eons spent rummaging through climbing magazines and video archives for the inspiration to fuel the next great season. Places like Ha Long Bay’s aquatic limestone monoliths, and Armenia’s geometric Basalt columns roll through my head throughout the day, breathing meaning into my well-atrophied social life.

In times like these, when everything is quiet, and the only holds warm enough to grasp onto are plastic, your dreams are all you have. So I present here, my dreams, my inspirations, and the birth of a secret project. One that was vaguely conceived over a few too many bloody marys in Brooklyn, New York, almost two years ago. Welcome to my future. Welcome to Snacks & Storytelling.
